Introduction

Zetao Liao, PHD & MD

Titles

Associate Chief Physician

Department of Rheumatology and Immunology

The 3rd Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University

Research Interests

·Diagnosis and therapy of Ankylosing Spondylitis and Spondyloarthritis

·Genetics of Ankylosing Spondylitis

Dr. Liao’s early research work focuses on the clinical aspects of Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS) and Spondyloarthritis (SpA). In 2006, he helped to conduct a large epidemiology survey on Han population of Southern China, verified the established classification criteria and published the data of Chinese population. He is also interested in genetics of AS, especially the inheritance mode and causative gene in AS family. In his Ph.D. course, he found a rare co-segregation mutation in the insulin receptor substrate 1 gene in one Chinese AS family. He is one of the major members of Prof. Gu Jieruo’s whole genome association study group, and has conducted research about susceptibility genes in Chinese population. Dr. Liao’s recent work focuses on the gene-environmental interaction in AS, and has received a grant from the National Natural Science Fund of China (NSFC). Meanwhile, he has conducted more than 20 international and national clinical trials as the co-investigator.
