Introduction of the department of psychiatry

The department of psychiatry is the second earliest-established (est. 1983) institute within a general hospital to provide mental health service. At the first few years, our service focused on psychological counselling. In 1994, after the inpatient department was built, our major service was shifted to psychiatry.

With more than 20 years’ of rapid development, it has become the biggest psychiatry department within general hospital in Guangdong province. We have four inpatient wards with a total 180 beds. We provide humanity-oriented inpatient care that all the patients are free to walk around within the inpatient areas, and the families and friends are allowed to stay with the patient during hospitalization.

Besides clinical practice, we are devoted to clinical and basic research. In recent years, we have conducted a lots of research in bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, depression and obsessive complusive disorders under the financial support of a various of grant. As one of the first accredited national drug clinical institute, we have conducted more than 20 clinical trials in cooperation with international pharmaceutical companies. So far, about 200 papers were published on foreign and domestic academic journals. Furthermore, we invest on translational research to improve the quality of care. We have built extensive networks in a variety of research fields, such immunology to neuro-imaging, and behavioral research to genetics by collaborating clinicians, scientists, and leading experts from institution, like Wellcome trust centre for human genetics of Oxford university.

We provide graduated education for psychiatry, medical psychology and psychiatric nursing and promote problem-based learning. As one of the first certificated national resident training centre, we provide residency and advanced education program in psychiatry. There is 3 Chief physician, 7 Associate Chief physician and 5 lecturers. Among them, 5 are Ph.D. supervisor, two are honored as “Couple Ye Rengao and Li Youji outstanding young teacher” , 6 received the title of “Advanced Individual of Sun Yat-sen Uninversity for Clinical Teaching “, and most have been invited to write state-planned textbooks.
