Introduction of Medical Oncology Department

Medical oncology department was established in May 2005. It is a professional department carrying out diagnosis and treatment of malignant tumor. We provide standardized and individualized clinical services to cancer patients, i.e. special treatment for special cancer disease. After more than ten years of development, medical oncology department has become a professional provincial oncology department in a grade 3 and first-class hospital in Guangdong Province. Our department provides adjuvant chemotherapy, radical chemotherapy and palliative chemotherapy for common tumors and molecular targeted therapy. We have established individualized comprehensive treatment models for malignant lymphoma, breast cancer, colorectal cancer and other malignancies. Currently oncology department discharges more than 230 patients monthly, and the annual number of hospitalization had reach more than 2750 in recent year. The cure rate of hospitalized patients and successful rescue rate is about 90%, and the diagnose accordance rate is about 99%.

 

The medical oncology department is consisted by three parts, a modern oncology wards, an outpatient clinic and a laboratory. The ward has a very comfortable environment and fully-digital security management system. There are thirteen physicians, including a chief physician, three deputy chief physicians, seven attending physicians, two residents. All physicians are graduated from the famous medical schools with master or above degrees.

 

Our department use treatment guidelines of American Society of Clinical Oncology specialist uses (ASCO) and the Chinese Society of Clinical Oncology (CSCO). In order to ensure the quality of care, we design an individualized treatment plan based on the each patient’s personal condition and the clinical guidelines. Medical oncology department has accumulated rich experience in diagnosis and treatment of various tumors, including lung cancer, gastrointestinal cancer, breast cancer, biliary tract cancer, pancreatic cancer, lymphoma, head and neck cancer, genitourinary cancer and soft tissue sarcoma. We specialized in difficult and complex clinical issues.

 

 The department has the drug approval authorities of various charitable drugs given by the China Red Cross. Those drugs include gefitinib, erlotinib, sorafenib, Icotinib, Sunitinib, bevacizumab, cetuximab,trastuzumab and so on.

 

Medical oncology department attaches great importance on clinical nursing. Our nurses are able to provide "patient-centered" humanistic care, psychological care, pain treatments and standardized nursing of chemotherapy treatments. What’s more, they are highly experienced in inserting peripherally inserted central venous catheter (PICC). Currently our department has four of PICC nurse specialist who has completed a total of more than 10,000 intubations. They open an outpatient venous catheter clinic to help patients to deal with various issues related to the catheter.

 

Special Features of Medical Oncology Department

 -Specialist Responsibility in Tracking the Latest Development in Single Diseases

We designated every specialist to be responsible for tracking the latest development in the treatment of a certain type of tumor. They should also be familiar with the update on treatment guideline of American Society of Clinical Oncology Annual Meeting and Clinical Oncology Annual Meeting of China. Qu Lin, Deputy Chief Physician, is responsible for tracking the treatment development of biliary tract tumors and malignant lymphoma. Dong Min, Deputy Chief Physician, is responsible for tracking the treatment development of breast cancer. Wenjing Yun, Deputy Chief Physician, is responsible for tracking the treatment development of lung cancer. There is also a designated physician who is responsible for tracking the treatment development of special types of tumor, such as the urinary tract tumors, head and neck cancer, colon cancer, stomach cancer, pancreatic cancer, lymphoma, soft tissue sarcoma, esophageal cancer, and gynecological cancer. Our department conducts annual systematic learning of treatment updates for different kinds of cancer.

 -Establishing a Standardized Painless Demonstration Ward

In March 2012, our department became a standardized painless demonstration ward of Guangdong province. We have committed to carry out the standardized and individualized treatment of cancer pain, and successfully established a dynamic evaluation mechanism, difficult and complicated consultation system and followed-up system for cancer pain patients. We also established regular training and education program of standardized treatment of cancer pain for healthcare workers.

 -Great Emphasis on Humanistic care

Our department provides humanistic care for patients who are undergoing cancer chemotherapy, and adheres to the "ethics first" philosophy that all staff should be able to show emphasis, to understand and take good care of the patient. We strive to improve the quality of life, minimize the pain of terminal cancer patient and ensure their right to death with dignity.
