Introduction

The department of respiratory medicine has inpatient ward, outpatient clinic, bronchoscope room, lung function room and specialized laboratory. It has 1 Professor and Chief Physician, 1 Chief Physician, 5 Vice Chief Physicians, 3 attending doctors, 2 residents, 3 technologists and 14 nurses. 8 physicians have Ph.D degree while 3 physicians has research experience aboard.

The ward has 42 inpatient beds and each bed is equipped with life-support machines and monitors. We have 1,300 inpatients and around 16,000 outpatients each year. We are the first few departments that initiated the fibreoptic bronchoscopy in Guangdong province. Biopsy, bronchoalveolar lavage, endobronchial balloon expansion and cryotherapy for endobronichial obstruction (thoracoscopy will be carried out if necessary) are common procedures performed by our surgeons. The pulmonary function room is equipped with advanced lung testing equipment for spirometry, diffusion function, bronchodilation and bronchial provocation. The laboratory gives strong support to clinical work, it tests and reports pathogens from various samples, such as sputum, blood, urine, pleural effusion, etc.

Our department provides teaching and medical training for undergraduates, nursing students, residents and postgraduate students. We also provide short-term medical training for physicians or surgeons from the other hospitals. We have some corporation programs with hospitals/medical schools in Japan and U.S.. Every year, we send medical staff to our oversea partners for academic exchange and learning.

The department’s research focused on pulmonary infectious disease. In 1985, it’s the first medical institution successfully isolated bacillus legionnaires in China. In 1980s, the department began a series of research projects on epidemiology and mechanisms of resistance to antibiotics in methicillin resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). The department took the lead in rapid diagnosis of pnuemonia caused by aeruginosus bacillus, bacterial biomembrane and endotoxin in China during 1990s. In the past 10 years, there is more than 30 research projects receive grants from national, provincial and ministerial-level governmental agencies. Currently, there are 3 ongoing research projects funded by national scientific funds of China (NSFC). More than 35 articles we published in English are collect by SCI-indexed journals, we also publish over 250 articles in Chinese.

In addition, the department had won the third prize of the Scientific and Technological Progression Award in Guangdong province for twice, and second prize for once. It also won the third prize of the Scientific and Technological Progress of Zhongshan Medical School in 1995. The department made important contribution for the prevention and treatment of SARS during the outbreak in 2003.

Diagnosis and Treatment

In Guangdong province, our department takes the lead to carry out diagnosis and treatment for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, lung cancer, pulmonary embolism, interstitial lung disease (ILD) and sleep apnea syndrome (SAS). We are especially experienced in COPD, severe pulmonary infection and critical care medicine.
